About the author:
Shaun Millea
Liverpool born, writer and teacher.
It’s been over 30 years since the Hillsborough Disaster and the pain in the city, although eased has never gone away, especially for the families of those loved ones who died so tragically.
A chance conversation in May 2018 prompted me to write this story. I had been reading one of my children’s books to a group of children at a festival in Toxteth Library in Liverpool when I got talking to a local lady who was telling me about her niece and nephew. They lived in Bristol and had come to visit Liverpool; she took them to see the tourist sites and visited the Hillsborough Memorial at Anfield Stadium.
She told me that neither of them knew anything about Hillsborough or what had happened there, she’d tried to explain it to them but found it hard to do so as they were too young to grasp the enormity of it. I was very shocked that they didn’t know, but thinking about it later, maybe I shouldn’t have been!
In Liverpool we talk about it, we tell our children, we keep it alive so that it never happens to anyone ever again. Outside of the city, Hillsborough can mean nothing to many, especially the young.
So, I have decided to tell the story of Hillsborough in the form of a children’s book, in the hope that others understand what this city went through and why we won’t let it go or forget! It’s not based on real characters, but it is based on very real events that changed the face of football, the establishment, the city, its people and the families of the 96 who went to the match and never came home.
