Hillsborough Tragedy to be taught in Schools.       non-profit campaign.

Shaun Millea, Liverpool author started his journey to have the Hillsborough tragedy to be taught in schools in 2019 with the release of his children's book.

"Hillsborough When Will Dad Be Home - One Boys Story Of a Tragedy"

About Shaun and his Book

It’s been over 30 years since the Hillsborough Disaster and the pain in the city, although eased has never gone away, especially for the families of those loved ones who died so tragically.

A chance conversation in May 2018 prompted me to write this story. I had been reading one of my children’s books to a group of children at a festival in Toxteth Library in Liverpool when I got talking to a local lady who was telling me about her niece and nephew. They lived in Bristol and had come to visit Liverpool; she took them to see the tourist sites and visited the Hillsborough Memorial at Anfield Stadium. She told me that neither of them knew anything about Hillsborough or what had happened there, she’d tried to explain it to them but found it hard to do so as they were too young to grasp the enormity of it. I was very shocked that they didn’t know, but thinking about it later, maybe I shouldn’t have been!

In Liverpool we talk about it, we tell our children, we keep it alive so that it never happens to anyone ever again. Outside of the city,

Hillsborough can mean nothing to many, especially the young. So, I have decided to tell the story of Hillsborough in the form of a children’s book, in the hope that others understand what this city went through and why we won’t let it go or forget! It’s not based on real characters, but it is based on very real events that changed the face of football, the establishment, the city, its people and the families of the 96 who went to the match and never came home.

The Book goes' to Council

The Hillsborough Disaster will be added to the curriculum in Liverpool schools and its anniversary will be marked with a dedicated ‘Hillsborough Day’, after a motion was passed by the city council.
The motion put forward by Ian Byrne, MP for Liverpool, West Derby, who proposed the annual day to mark the disaster and move towards teaching the history of The Hillsborough Tragedy in schools.

It passed unopposed at last night’s (January 26 2022) council meeting and means that Liverpool City Council  now supports aims of the 'The Real Truth Legacy Project’, which is led by Ian Byrne MP, in conjunction with many Hillsborough families and survivors.

The Book goes' to Parliament

Hillsborough disaster and the National Curriculum
EDM (Early Day Motion)649: tabled on
15 November 2021

Tabled in the 2021-22 session.
This motion has been signed by 37 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.

Motion text
That this House acknowledges that, 32 years after the Hillsborough disaster, criminal trials collapsed in May 2021 and nobody has been held to account for the unlawful killings of 97 innocent people; acknowledges that it took 23 years of campaigning for the truth about the disaster to be finally acknowledged at the Hillsborough Independent Panel and for lies and smears about victims and survivors to be corrected; further acknowledges that it took 27 years for the true inquest verdicts of unlawful killing to be recorded; recognises the important work of the hon. Member for Garston and Halewood in getting Parliament to learn lessons from the disaster and her work to introduce legislation that would ensure that bereaved families and survivors of future disasters never go through the injustices faced by the Hillsborough families and survivors; furthermore recognises the important role of education in learning the lessons from the disaster; and calls on the Government to include the Hillsborough disaster in the National Curriculum, a programme of education which should cover the events of the past 32 years, the continuing campaign for justice and how we ensure the events of that fateful day are not forgotten and that the ensuing miscarriage of justice is never repeated.

Dear School Colleagues,
The Real Truth Legacy Project

Survivors and the families of the 97 fans who lost their lives as a result of the national disaster that occurred at Hillsborough on April 15th in 1989 have been involved in a three-decade campaign in pursuit of justice.

The Real Truth Legacy Project was started in September 2021 to ensure that the real truth of Hillsborough is taught across all age groups to ensure that lies and smears about the disaster propagated by the media and state agencies will be eradicated forever.

On 26 January 2022 Liverpool city councillors passed our motion to commemorate the Hillsborough disaster with a dedicated education programme and Hillsborough assembly in all schools governed by the local education authority. The motion was passed unopposed by the council with full cross-party support and this motion was then put through every region in Liverpool City Region. So the Real Truth Legacy Project is unanimously supported politically across Liverpool City Region.

In the zip file you will find the following documents to support you in delivering an assembly to the pupils in your school. Our recommendation is that this is suitable for pupils from Year 5 upwards and it has been trialled with this age group in several primary schools.

1.      An introduction to the project
2.      A PDF assembly
3.      Notes for teachers
4.      Context and timeline
5.      Sources and further information

Colleagues from the LFC Foundation are willing to help schools with this and should be contacted by email: [email protected] or schools can email the [email protected] – landline contact is 0151 432 5675

With very best wishes,
Ian Byrne
